Contact-A-Coat FAQ

Which obstacles should I coat?

Contact obstacles; the A-frame, Teeter, Dog walk, and the Pause Table. Rubberized surfaces offer traction for dogs on contacts, and do away with sliding tables, scrabbling a-frames, and slippery-sloped dogwalks. If you want your dog to have experience with both a rubberized surface and a non-rubberized, you may treat only one side of the obstacle.

What surfaces can I coat?

ContactACoat resin will adhere to almost anything, including wood, fiberglass, and aluminum surfaces. It will not adhere to plastic. Because it is so adherent, extreme care must be taken during application.

Can the surfaces be already painted?

It is recommended that the product be applied over pre-painted, cured wood. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of debris. Use exterior rated paint to protect the wood itself from the elements. The rubber is not designed to extend the life of the wood itself.

Do I need to apply paint over the chips?

No. The chips are solid blue and yellow. There is no need to paint over them.

Can I get the rubber chips in any other colors?

Red, purple or teal, chips are available upon request. Apply the same color chip as you used to paint the obstacle.

Will I have to reapply the chips from wear?

Rubber surfaces have been used internationally for years, and over time it has been proven that rubber contacts are durable. It is rare that resurfacing is necessary. Improper application can cause the surface to wear unevenly and need resurfacing. If this happens, more pellets can be applied if you had any leftovers, and they are also available for purchase.

What tools will I need?

A putty knife is included in your kit, but we also recommend:
  • A large paintbrush or disposable foam paintbrush for the resin
  • A plastic groundsheet or tarp to collect any loose or excess chips and to protect surfaces from the resin
  • A tape measure and pencil
  • Measuring cups
  • Baggies

The resin is low odor so Contactacoat is safe to apply indoors with proper ventilation. Allow it to dry thoroughly before it is exposed to weather.

We recommend you have a tape measure and pencil for marking the sections of your obstacle surface, and some measuring cups and baggies for dividing out the chips equally. Applying the chips on your obstacles in sections is key to having enough pellets to evenly cover the surface and also helps to allow enough time to apply the chips before the resin starts to cure. It is important to not attempt to do large sections at a time as the resin does start curing once applied, so working with smaller sections will ensure that the resin will not dry before you have had time to apply the chips.

Is there enough material in the kits to cover my obstacles?

Yes, when done properly, each kit has enough materials to coat standard sized agility equipment. Divide your surfaces into imaginary sections, and divide the chips into equal amounts to cover those sections. It does not need to be applied thickly to be effective. It is designed to provide traction and cushion with a thin application. If applied too thickly, excess chips will fall off as dogs use the equipment. Your kit will come with detailed application instructions.

What are the obstacle sizes that the kits cover?

Though not exact, in general the kits will cover these common sizes:
  • Aframe Kit: When properly done, this kit will cover both sides of a-frames up to 9' tall x 4' wide.
  • Table Kit: When properly done, this kit will cover table tops up to 36" square.
  • Teeter/See-saw Kit: When properly done, this kit will cover planks up to 12' long and 12" wide.
  • DogWalk Kit: When properly done, this kit will cover 3 planks up to 12' long and 12" wide each.

You will receive detailed instructions on how to apply the rubber chips to make sure that you have enough to cover the whole obstacle. The key is to divide the chips and surface evenly and doing one section of the surface at a time.

What about the slats on my obstacle?

Apply the rubber around the slats. The slats are too narrow for the chips to adhere properly, and it is not necessary to apply rubber to the slats. It is not necessary to remove the slats.

Can you surface the obstacles for me?

If desired, we can surface an obstacle for you at the time of purchase for an additional fee above the cost of the kit. Please call us for a quote at 1-800-254-9441.

What support do I have for application?

When you order a kit, you will get instructions in the box. But we will ALSO send you a link to an application video that you can watch, as well as more detailed instructions that you can print out and use.
