Weave Poles Information Page...
Here you will find commonly asked questions and
shipping information for the competition weave poles we sell. Drop us a line
if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear from you!
Q. "I am new to agility...is the distance between poles always the same, regardless of dog size?"
A. Yes, the pole distance is always the same, regardless of what size dog uses them. The distance between poles can range from 20"-24". Ours is 24" apart (center to center), which is approved for sanctioned AKC, USDAA, CPE, and many other competition venues.
Q. "What are the specs for the Competition Poles you sell?"
A. The poles are 1" outer diameter (3/4" inner) furniture-grade pipe. They are 40" tall and capped with black inner plugs. The "sockets" that the poles insert into are 3 1/2" tall. The base is powder-coated steel, flat, and 1 1/2" wide. The poles are spaced 24" apart, center to center. All of these specifications are approved for sanctioned AKC, USDAA, CPE and many other venues’ trials.
Q. "How do they ship/come?"
A. When the 6-pole set is put together, it is approximately 12' in length. But it cannot ship as one long piece, so you will get three 2-pole sections (approximately 4' each) that you attach together on the ground. This also has the advantage that you may use them as 2x2 training weave poles.
Q. "How do the sections connect together?"
A. The sections overlap slightly, and simple hardware holds them together. The hardware is low profile, and safe for dog's feet.
Q. "What surfaces can I use them on?"
A. You may use them either on hard surfaces such as matting, or grass. We include flat head ground stakes for use in grass. Because each section attaches to each other, you may or may not need the ground stakes, and they are effective on hard surfaces.
Q. "How can I use this set for training beginner dogs?"
A. The Guide Wire method. We offer great-quality clip-on wires that are attached to the poles. These create a visual pathway for the dog to run through. Slowly you lower or raise the wires out of the dog's line of sight, until eventually he doesn't know they are gone, and your dog is weaving.
The Straight Pole method. Another method is to just guide the dog through rigid straight poles using your leash, and/or gently nudging him in and out of the poles with your knee and basic body language.
The 2x2 Method. Because the set comes in 2 pole sections, you may use them as 2x2 training weave poles.
Q. "What do you think of " spring-bottom" competition weave sets?"
A. Generally, the major agility organizations do not recommend them, so we no longer carry them. Our Competition Set's poles do flex a little, however, allowing the proper amount of 'give' to the dogs running through. This is desirable in a good competition set.
