This Month's Free Training Lesson:
Sprucing Up Your Agility Course
"Dear Professor K. Nyne,
Q. I want to make my course more challenging for my dog. She's looking a little bored with the same old jumps and turns. How can I freshen my course up without costing a fortune?"
- Bored in Baltimore, MD
The Professor's Answer:

Oh, boy! I hear you. Sometimes going out to my course, I just want to see something new and exciting- and I want it quickly! Here are some ideas to get you started.
RearrangeIf you always run the same course, it's bound to get tiring for you and your pup! Rearrange a few of your obstacles to look at things in a new way. If you don't want to move your obstacles around, start at the end instead of the beginning. Change the way your obstacles look with a few wings!
WingsAnother easy way to make your course new, challenging and more interesting is to add wings. Wings add an element of handling challenge to your course, since your dog is presented with a different looking obstacle, and is forced to move further from your side than she might be used to.
ProofAll of this change will add more challenge for your dog! You can step it up another notch by beginning to proof your dog on obstacles. One day, have a wing on a jump. The next day, remove it, and see how your dog reacts! Get your dog accustomed to changes on the course so if you compete they'll never know what to expect. Do crazy things like dance around as you send them ahead to an obstacle.
EvaluateEvaluate your course, and decide what you want to be there. Do you want a tunnel? Do you want another jump to complete a pinwheel? Maybe a handling challenge area, like a gamble! Do you have your obstacles too close together to be appreciated? Add diversity to your course by pulling out your contact obstacles more often, or taking something out of play for a week or two. When you go back to it, it'll be exciting and new!

One of the best things about agility is it's so easy to make things interesting and fun if you get bored. Agility is all about upbeat fun, and making your course more challenging and stepping it up a notch is always a great way to keep the activity fresh for you, and your canine partner.
